McCain Rips Obama's Branding

In web design we have a name for when someone steals or appropriates someone else's work, it's called a rip. It's the kind of behavior you can expect from unscrupulous companies trying to put up a site on the cheap but...the Republican candidate for president?

Check out the new tagline and branding on display on John McCain's site and tell me if it looks familiar:

Sam Stein:

McCain's seems to be positioning himself so that he is not caught, like Sen Hillary Clinton, simply ceding the mantle of change to Obama. But when the co-opting of images, logos, and slogans is this blatant, it could prove more embarrassing than advantageous.
I mean, seriously folks, is this a joke or what? Is there any better display of the bankruptcy of ideas in the Republican party?

Don't you mean Denny's? (none / 0)

although that's fairly uncharitable to Denny's.

I think TGI Friday's is more apt... the place that tries to be cool and "hip" by putting old-timey stuff on the walls and (formerly) making their waiters wear "flair," but in the end, you're still hanging out at an overpriced chain bar/restaurant with mediocre fried food on the periphery of a shopping mall.

John McCan't... (2.00 / 1)

Jokes from Hubby:

I don't know what's more lonely, a pro-McCain blog or a Bob Barr telethon (it's a wrong number, but it still counts as a call!).

McCain couldn't log onto his blog anyway becase he'd spend the entire night pressing "play" on his remote control.

Will let you know if we have more...

LOL

When my sister and I were watching his speech last night, she looked at me and said "What the hell are they chanting--Where's your cane?!"

I said, "No, vote McCain."

She's not the brightest bulb on the tree, but it struck me as hilarious at the time.

* sad trombone *

Speaking of which, wouldn't it be great if John McCain could adopt the themesong for "This Old House" to introduce him at his rallies?

If you're going to invoke The Who... (2.00 / 1)

Sen. McCain's song really would be "My Generation"

People try to put us down
cause we barely get around
Without my blanket I'm awful cold
And my breath smells just like mold
My generation baby
My generation
Why won't you get my hearing aid
So I can hear what you all say
I don't feel any sensation
Just talking about my generation
My generation baby

Re: John McCan't... (2.00 / 3)

McCain's blog has three selections when you log in: Supporter, Undecided or Unregistered voter. If you select Undecided or Unregistered, it hides all of his policies.

(joking!)

The photo on McCain's website looks like it should carry the disclaimer, "Ask your doctor if McCain is right for you."

The (2.00 / 1)

The GOP is a joke, a sad exuse of a party.

They put up the best of the 8 worst candidates they had and ran the only one they weren't afraid to lose.

I am enjoying watching them get decimated every day.

What I am intrigued by is the citizen who donates to McCain.

This is going to backfire.

This is just getting macabre.

As a former graphic designer, I am so psyched that the Democrats FINALLY FINALLY FINALLY have a logo that doesn't use that New Englandish soft garamond that they use every year.

Re: McCain Rips Obama's Branding (2.00 / 1)

Whoever did Obama's logo and branding deserves a lot of credit. Hillary's is good too (the flag that looks like a ponytail), but Obama's is probably the strongest and most distinctive I've ever seen in a presidential campaign.

Re: McCain Rips Obama's Branding (2.00 / 4)

Ha! I didn't believe you and had to check myself.  That's ridiculous.  It's clearly not as good and clearly influenced - just like his stupid speech Tuesday about "change".  Guess what McCain, Obama says you're Bush III because you are Bush III - simply (somehow) with less charisma.

by reenactor on Wed Jun 04, 2008 at 06:29:50 PM EST

Re: McCain Rips Obama's Branding (2.00 / 5)

What's especially funny is that the speech and background were panned everywhere---even Fox---but the McCain's campaign decided to stick with it anyway.

Stay the course!

Re: McCain Rips Obama's Branding (2.00 / 5)

He can't deliver a speech.  He talks about himself, Barack Obama, Osama bin Laden, America, everything, all in the same "Reading Goldilocks and the Three Bears to a small child" tone of voice.

I wanted to watch his speech and pay attention to it.  Exactly 30 seconds into it I started flicking through the channels before I realized what I was doing.

just today when I heard a little of it on the tv I told my husband he always reads his speeches like he's reading a nursery rhyme or something,

it's so true, you think he'd get a coach or something.  It's so sad!

Re: McCain Rips Obama's Branding (2.00 / 3)

Wow. Not only does that look much worse than Obama's, it also comes across as parody. Not what you want to see from a presidential candidate for two reasons. First, it is flippant and dismissive in a way that doesn't give you any strength. Second, it automatically calls to mind Obama's campaign and serves as an acknowledgement that they have something McCain doesn't.

How funny that his idea of running as "the change candidate" means copying everything Obama does.

McSame is a copycat.  He has no original ideas.  He's the "maverick" whose decisions and policies magically transform to those of the audience he's addressing.  He has no personality, just another mouthpiece and we've got one of them already.
